Cygnus Launch their Latest ROV Mountable Thickness Gauge with Video Overlay

Cygnus Instruments, the leading UK manufacturer of digital multiple echo ultrasonic thickness gauges, have launched a new range of ROV mountable devices. The new gauges are designed to work at greater depths, streamline the measurement process and provide unrivalled functionality.

With two new models pressure rated to 2000 and 4000msw, the gauges break new ground with optional on-screen video overlay of thickness measurements, allowing ROV pilots to guide the ROV whilst viewing measurements simultaneously. It is also the first Cygnus device to offer user selectable output data in both RS-422 and RS-232 without the need for a converter for use with multiplexers.

The standard system will continue to be supplied with Cygnus’ standard Windows-based software, CygLink, for independently monitoring, recording or logging thickness measurements.

With functionality a priority, these latest units provide a switchable deep coat mode for measuring through coatings 20mm thick, a removable cover plate for full serviceability and industry standard wet mateable ‘MC’ style underwater connectors. There is also a safety pressure relief valve and securing eye for added security.

Cygnus Instruments will be displaying the Work Class ROV mountable ultrasonic thickness gauges at the Seawork  2011 exhibition in Southampton on 14-16 June, alongside the Cygnus Underwater, Cygnus Mini ROV mountable and our range of probe handling devices.

Britannia Proves CygScope is worth its Weight in Silver

Lead and silver smelting company Britannia have named the CygScope their best equipment purchase of 2010, claiming that it has made their jobs easier and safer.

The efficiency of the vacuum in the silver production process is paramount to producing a high product yield and leaks can waste 20-30% of a compressor’s output. The CygScope uses detection of ultrasound to allow the user to quickly and accurately pinpoint leaks in industrial plant and machinery.

Not only has the CygScope improved the ability of the maintenance department to detect leaks, it has ensured greater safety in the leak detection process.  The parabolic probe has meant that they are now able to carry out checks from a distance in areas previously inaccessible due to heat or height, effectively eliminating missed leaks.

NEW Cygnus S1 Probe Handler for ROV Ship Hull Inspection

Complementing the Cygnus range of ROV Mountable thickness gauges, the NEW Cygnus S1 Probe Handler is developed for use on Inspection & Medium sized ROVs carrying out ship hull inspections.

The Cygnus S1 is constructed from acetyl with stainless steel fixings to keep the weight down, which is critical to smaller inspection ROVs operating underwater. The design of ultrasonic probe alignment providing 45 degrees of movement and the magnetic pads enable a pilot to steer and attach the ROV to the hull plate easily.

NEW Waveblade

An excellent tool for removing marine growth prior to thickness measurement

Cygnus is pleased to introduce the Waveblade, an easy to use barnacle remover with powerful oscillating head and sprung steel scraper blade, enabling easy hull maintenance without damage to  the paintwork. The Waveblade can be used as a complementary tool to easily remove marine growth prior to thickness measurement. The Waveblade with waterproof rating to 4.5 metres depth is designed for use both above and below water. A selection of special purpose blades suits a wide range of cleaning applications including fibreglass hulls, propellers, steel pipes, rudders, Z-Drives, concrete foundations and spiral steel bars. The simple to change mechanism allows blades to be changed in seconds!

Other user-friendly features include ergonomic body  that fits easily & comfortably in the hand of all users; the aluminium knuckle guard protecting hands from sharp barnacles and fouling during operation; lanyard attachment point for security and convenient storage.

Sponsoring the Tall Ships’ Race 2010

Whilst busy thriving in the inspection industry, Cygnus also participates in charity activities. This year Cygnus sponsored the Tall Ships’ Races 2010. The Tall Ships' Races are an internationally acclaimed annual competition organised by Sail Training International and held every summer in European waters. Each year between 70 and 100 vessels from 15-20 countries, crewed by some 5-6,000 young people from over 30 countries worldwide take part in this unique event that combines four days of activities in each port with racing or cruising-in-company between ports. The main aim of the event is to provide an opportunity for young people to develop their personal skills in a challenging and memorable sail-training environment and hence at least 50% of a Tall Ship's crew must be aged 15-25.

NEW Cygnus W1 Work Class ROV Probe Handler

Following extensive sea trials and recent purchases from several leading subsea engineering companies, we are pleased to announce the new Cygnus W1 Work Class ROV Probe Handler.

Complementing the Cygnus ROV Mountable thickness gauges, the  Cygnus W1 Work Class ROV Probe Handler has been developed to offer an engineered probe-handling solution for Work Class ROV thickness gauging operations.

The extremely rugged Cygnus W1 Work Class Probe Handler is constructed of 316 stainless steel throughout and has a shock absorbing capabilities to protect the ultrasonic probe. The Cygnus W1 can be supplied with either T-bar or Fish-Tail handles to suit various manipulators. The design of  double-jointed coupling enables perfect probe alignment.

Seawork 2010 Competition Winner!

At the Seawork Exhibition in Southampton this year Cygnus Instruments held a competition challenging the hammer test of the boat surveyor.  The thickness of a piece of steel had to be guessed by using only a hammer.

Over 70 people entered the competition and we received estimates ranging from 2.3 mm thick up to 22 mm thick by the trial of the hammer.

The actual reading was 6 mm exactly.  Whilst we had more than one correct reading there could only be one winner.  Those correct readings were put into a hat and the lucky winner that was pulled out was Leon Jennings of Leon Jennings Yacht Surveys!!

We would like to say congratulations to Leon and a big thank you to all those who took part in the competition.  Leon will collect his prize, a Cygnus 4 complete kit, during July.

For Testing Weather Tightness of Hatch Covers

Cygnus Instruments is delighted to announce the NEW Cygnus Hatch Sure, an exciting addition to the Cygnus range of products. The New Cygnus Hatch Sure is designed to detect leaks and test the weather tightness of hatch covers using an ultrasonic transmitter, microphone and receiver.

As statistics show, sea water ingress is one of the major sources of damage to cargos resulting in expensive insurance claims. To address this issue, Cygnus has developed a NEW lightweight system - Cygnus Hatch Sure, with our expertise in ultrasound and 26 years of experience in inspection instrumentation. Cygnus Hatch Sure overcomes the obstacles in conventional hatch cover testing, such as insufficient ambient lighting, disruption to cargo loading operation, limitations with hose testing i.e. operating temperature, accuracy and pollution risk.

PRODUCT LAUNCH IN HONG KONG

Cygnus Hatch Sure had a successful product launch at the British Embassy in Hong Kong in November 2009. The presentations were very well attended by P & I clubs, ship owners, ship management companies, marine inspectors and marine law firms. In particular, the certified product training was extremely popular and beneficial to all those present. The opportunity to interact face to face with the customers and get direct feedback was a very useful exercise for us.

While the product launch was held in Hong Kong, distributor training also took place in Singapore and China. Cygnus Singapore and Mariso (Cygnus’ exclusive Chinese distributor) are now qualified and authorised to provide product training for Cygnus Hatch Sure locally.

NEW Product Range of Industrial Leak Detectors — CygScope R & RD

Following successful products launched in 2008, Cygnus Instruments is proud to announce a product diversification yet within the ultrasound-based technology. The Cygnus range is now extended with a new category of Industrial Leak Detectors including CygScope R, CygScope RD as well as the Data Logging and Intrinsically Safe models.

Employing ultrasonic technology, CygScope R and CygScope RD can identify leaks and locate even the smallest leakage through detecting ultrasound produced by escaping air or gas from steam traps, compressed air and vacuum systems accurately and quickly. CygScope R has a built-in LED level display with a loud speaker and headphones to audibly and visually alert any leakage to users. CygScope RD, in addition, has a digital LCD readout to facilitate comparative measurements over given periods. When used in conjunction with a contact probe, CygScope RD can also detect early signs of bearing wear in predictive maintenance.
